Windows servers are the servers used by those who are using Microsoft Windows and they are the most common type of server on the market today.  The reason they are the most common is because they are compatible with the vast majority of the people who require the use of a server.

The term Windows Server is actually just the brand name for server operating systems that were manufactured and released to the public by the Microsoft Corporation.  The software has been released or updated several times so you’ll see it in association with:

Windows Server 2003

Windows Server 2008

Windows HPC Server 2008

Windows Server 2008 R2

Windows Small Business Server

Windows Essential Business Server

Windows Home Server

The job of the Windows Server, or any server for that matter, is to process the requests and deliver data to client computers over either a local network of computers or even over the internet.  There are different types of Windows Servers to choose from such as web servers, proxy servers, FTP servers, and even online game servers.  The type of server you would choose would be dependent upon what you are doing and what your needs will be from the server at any one time.
